Education Minister highlighted Bangladesh government’s promise in Switzerland

Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury has highlighted Bangladesh’s significant progress in skill development – the current government’s commitment to ensuring access and equality to equal education and training, especially for marginalized groups such as women, indigenous communities and persons with disabilities.

The education minister highlighted these in the session on ‘Success and potential of Bangladesh in developing skill development system’ among the sessions of the ‘Global Skills Forum’ organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday (April 25).

Besides the Education Minister, senior representatives of employers and trade unions were present. Also present were representatives of major development partners, the European Union and the Government of Canada.

The Education Minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has taken a wide range of programs for this purpose, considering skill development and employment creation for all as tools in building Smart Bangladesh.

He said that all the development policies of the present government are based on the effort to create fair work opportunities for all. The government has taken necessary steps to improve the quality of general education as well as to expand technical and vocational education. To this end, life and livelihood lessons and essential life experience lessons have been included in the general education curriculum. Apart from this, the government has continued to invest in infrastructure development and quality improvement in technical and vocational education.

The Education Minister said that the literacy rate has increased to 75 percent as a result of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government’s continuous investment. He said that the participation of girls in technical and vocational education as well as general education has increased significantly. Currently, among the participants in the school certificate examination, the participation rate of girls exceeds the participation rate of boys, said the Education Minister.

Participating in the discussion, the Director General of the International Labor Organization, Gilbert Hongbo, said that as a result of the government’s recent steps, qualitative progress has been achieved in skill development. Director General Hongbo commented that Bangladesh is a shining example to the world in expanding and increasing the quality of women’s education.
