A youth was arrested in Mehendiganj, Barisal in connection with theft.
A housewife died after being stabbed by a thief when she stopped him from stealing gold ornaments from his house in Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal.
He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka on Thursday evening, said the OC of Mehendiganj police station. Yashinul Haq.
The deceased Kulsoom Begum (55) is the wife of Naib Abdul Khalek Naib of Ambikapur area of Ward No. 3 of Mehendiganj Municipality.
Police arrested one person on April 2 in the March 30 night incident. The arrested is Tanzil Hossain alias Mohammad Ali (21) son of Badal Palawan of the same area.
Kulsoom Begum’s son-in-law Jahangir Hossain told bdnews24.com, “The thief entered the father-in-law’s house around 8:30 pm on the day of the incident. At that time mother-in-law Kulchum Begum was in the bathroom. He came out of the bathroom and saw the thief.
“Then the thief snatched the mother-in-law’s neck chain and earrings. When he tried to block the thief, he ran away with a knife in his stomach.”
Jahangir said, Kulchum Begum was under treatment at Azgar Ali Hospital in Gendaria, Dhaka for 26 days. He died around 7 pm on Thursday. After the autopsy in Dhaka, the body will be taken to Mehendiganj.
OC Yachinul Haque told bdnews24.com that Tanzil Hossain was arrested within 72 hours of the incident. After admitting his involvement in the incident, he gave a statement under section 164 in the court.
Kulsum Begum died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka; After the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the relatives, he said.
