Rajshahi: The people of Rajshahi region are passing through the hottest season. The region has seen highs above 40 or 41 degrees for a week in a row.

The season’s highest temperature was recorded at 41.8 degree Celsius on Thursday (April 25).

An emergency meeting was held at the Rajshahi City Corporation (RASIK) to decide what to do in the heatwave. Rasik Panel Mayor-2 and Ward No. 13 Councilor Abdul Momin were present as the chief guests in the meeting organized at City Hall meeting room of Nagar Bhavan on Thursday afternoon. Dr. Rasikar chief health officer gave a welcome speech. FAM Anjuman Ara Begum. Officials and councilors of Rasik were present in the meeting.

It was informed in the meeting that health care camps will be conducted throughout the day at ten points of the city from Friday (April 25) on the initiative of the city corporation. Sufficient saline and clean drinking water will be provided there. Places are – Court Square, C&B Square, Saheb Bazar, Rani Bazar, New Market, Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Square, Station, Bus Terminal, Am Square, Bhadra Square, Binodpur Square.

Apart from this, leaflets will be distributed to create awareness to avoid heat wave. Extensive campaign in social media and media, campaign will be done in all mosques of the city. The City Corporation will write to all private hospitals, clinics and health centers to provide emergency services at low cost to all patients affected by heatstroke. Although the health camp will run for 7 days, other activities will continue till the heat alert.

Meanwhile, the international voluntary organization Red Crescent Society has miked to be careful about the heat wave in Rajshahi since last week. They are giving various precautionary tips to avoid various heat related diseases including heat stroke this summer. Besides, fire service and civil defense are running similar programs from Wednesday.

Shahidul Islam, senior observer of Rajshahi Meteorological Observatory, said that the highest temperature of the current season was recorded at 41.8 degrees Celsius at 3 pm on Thursday. This is the highest temperature so far this season. Earlier on Saturday (April 20) at 3 pm, the highest temperature in Rajshahi was recorded at 41.5 degrees Celsius. The next day, Sunday (April 21), the same temperature was recorded. Then on April 22, 40 degrees Celsius was recorded. And today on April 23, the highest temperature recorded in Rajshahi was 40.5 degrees Celsius, yesterday on April 24 it was 41.3 degrees Celsius. That is, this hot city on the banks of the Padma is making a record of breaking the temperature.

Umme Chalma, Training Officer of Rajshahi District Agriculture Extension Department, said that the agriculture of this region has been affected by continuous severe drought. Mango pulp is falling. Especially the paddy, maize and jute fields in the cropland are being burnt. However, to deal with the situation, farmers are advised to irrigate the land more.
