Rajshahi University’s summer vacation (Rabi) was scheduled from May 5 to 9 and Eid-ul-Azha vacation from June 16 to 24. However, suddenly the university authorities decided to postpone the summer vacation and coordinate it with Eid-ul-Azha. There has been a mixed reaction between teachers and students on the social media Facebook. It is being propagated by the university branch Chhatra League that this holiday has been postponed due to the request of President Mostafizur Rahman Babu. However, the university authorities denied the matter.

On Wednesday (April 24) at noon in the conference room of Syed Nazrul Islam administration building of the university, it was unanimously decided to postpone the holiday in the meeting of the senior administrative officers held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Golam Sabbir Sattar. Later, at around 2.30 pm, the administrator of the public relations office of the university, Professor Pranab Kumar Pandey, in a notification regarding the rescheduling of holidays, said that considering the fear of water shortage due to the ongoing heat wave and the difficulties faced by the students, the summer vacation has been postponed and coordinated with the holy Eid-ul-Azhar holiday.

According to the notification sent by the Public Relations Department, Rajshahi University’s summer vacation from May 5 to 9 and Eid-ul-Azha vacation from June 16 to 24 was pre-scheduled. But due to the ongoing heat wave, the holidays have been rescheduled considering the fear of water shortage and the difficulties faced by the students. University classes and examinations will be closed from 9th to 27th June and offices will be closed from 9th to 25th June during the rescheduled holiday. Classes and examinations will resume as usual from June 30.

Besides, the decision to close the classes on May 2 was withdrawn in the emergency meeting on April 21. It has been decided that the departments can conduct online teaching activities till June 6 if necessary.

Earlier on Tuesday, in the Facebook group Rajshahi University Family, a platform of more than 60,000 teachers and students of Rajshahi University, the president of the branch Chhatra League, Mostafizur Rahman Babu, highlighted the issue of coordinating the summer vacation with Eid-ul-Azha. He wrote there, ‘Eidul Fitr vacation, summer vacation and Eidul Azhar vacation combined, the students of the university are facing three consecutive months of vacation. This is disrupting the regular continuity of class-examinations and students are facing huge financial losses due to frequent home visits. The summer vacation is from 1st May to 13th May. If it coincides with the holiday of Eid-ul-Azhar, how will it be? I look forward to thoughtful feedback from students at all levels of the university.’

When the news of the postponement of the holiday was broadcast today, the matter went viral on social media. There, the leaders and activists of the branch Chhatra League shared the post of the president and thanked him.

When asked about this, the branch Chhatra League president said, many students of the university told me about postponing this holiday. I also made a post in the university family group. Most of the students have commented in favor of delaying the vacation. Later we spoke to the university authorities about this. We have requested them to postpone the vacation in consideration of the students. They may also feel the need to postpone the holiday. So the administration has coordinated this holiday with the Eid holiday.

However, denying the BCL’s request, University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sultan-ul-Islam said, “Is there a lack of decision-making people in the university?” The leave has been postponed based on the opinion of the senior officials of the administration, deans of the faculty. No one was delayed at the request. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the convenience of the students.
