‘Bangladesh is self-sufficient in many products’

Bangladesh is self-sufficient in many products. Hers is a Tangail saree. I got GI certificate of Tangail saree after following all legal procedures. Another country may be interested in Tangail saree, but it is our own product. Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that it will be ours.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the certificate distribution ceremony of Geographical Indication (GI) products at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday (April 25).

Industry Secretary Zakia Sultana was present as a special guest at the event organized by the Directorate of Patents, Industrial Design and TEDMarks. Foreign Service Academy Rector Ambassador Mashfi Binte Shams, Director General of Patent Industrial Design and TEDMarks Directorate Monim Hasan were also present. 14 products were certified on the occasion. A total of 31 products have been given GI certificate.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that the products which have received GI certificate and are waiting for the products have a tradition of some hundreds of years, some of them thousands of years. Therefore, it cannot be copied at will. We have been using these products for ages.

The minister said that Bangladesh is self-sufficient in many products. As once sacrificial animals had to be imported from neighboring countries. Now the animals of the country are quoted after meeting the demand for sacrifice. Sheikh Hasina’s strong leadership and role made this possible. The country is moving forward under his leadership. Projects like Metrorail, Padma Bridge have been implemented. More such projects will be implemented in the future.

He said, small scale industries should be sustained. The government has taken various initiatives for this.

He urged the Deputy Commissioner, concerned departments and foreign ambassadors to promote GI products. He thanked the Rector of the Foreign Service Academy for organizing such a program.
