Due to the severe heat wave across the country, educational institutions did not open even after the long holiday to protect the health of students. On April 21, the government announced the closure of educational institutions by extending the holiday till April 25. As April 26 and 27 are Friday and Saturday, classes are scheduled to resume in the educational institution on April 28 after a 7-day closure.

However, discussions have started on whether this holiday is increasing due to the heat wave not decreasing or whether educational institutions are opening on April 28. A section of guardians and an organization called Guardian Oikya Forum have demanded that the classes continue online. Many people are giving their opinion in favor of closing the educational institutions for a few more days.

What is the education administration thinking in such a situation? However, there was no direct answer to such questions. Officials from the institutions that oversee educational institutions said no final decision had been made and alternatives were being discussed.

The education administration says that no decision has been taken yet on extending vacations or taking online classes in the intense heat. Secondary and Higher Education and Technical and Madrasa Education Departments did not discuss this as the Education Minister was on a foreign tour. Even though the discussion is going on, the Directorate of Primary Education has not yet decided on the primary school.

However, there is strong discussion among the officials of the Department of Secondary, Technical and Madrasa and Primary Education about starting online classes. Many are also agreeing to start half period or short term classes. Also, they are thinking of giving instructions to students to do at home with assignments.

Children and students are most at risk in heat waves. However, no decision has been taken regarding the closure or opening of primary schools, said Director General (DG) Shah Rizwan Hayat of the Directorate of Primary Education.

He told Jago News, ‘Extending vacations, reducing classes to half periods or taking them in a shorter range or starting online classes – we are thinking about all these things. However, no decision has been finalized yet. On Friday (April 26) the matter could be discussed and a final decision taken. Whatever decision comes, it must be positive for the students. The government will not take a negative decision.’

On the other hand, the officials of the education administration said that holidays in secondary schools are not increasing anymore. If the heatwave does not subside, online classes may be instructed. Teachers may also be advised to keep students active with more assignments.

Director of Secondary and Higher Education Directorate (Secondary) Professor Syed Zafar Ali told Jago News, “We have not taken a final decision.” Discussions are ongoing. Instead of closing the classes altogether, thinking is also being done on how to keep the students engaged in studies with online classes or homework (assignment). However, the decision was not final in any matter.

The president of the Guardian Oikya Forum, veteran freedom fighter Ziaul Kabir Dulu told Jago News, ‘We have spoken to the guardians. Thinking about the overall aspect, I have talked about starting classes online without extending the closure of schools and colleges. Students will suffer more if educational institutions are closed in the new curriculum.’

The leader of the Parents’ Unity Forum strongly demanded that the government take steps to ensure the safety of children so that they can continue their studies at home.
