A clash took place between the chairman of a union and his opponent’s supporters over dominance of Shariatpur’s Jazeera. At least four people were injured when the grenade exploded.

The incident took place in Sarengkandi area of Bilaspur Union of the upazila on Wednesday (April 24) morning.

According to police and local sources, the current UP Chairman of Bilaspur Union Quddus Bepari alias Boma Quddus has a long-standing conflict with his electoral rival Jalil Madbar. Clashes between the supporters of both sides also happened several times over this. On March 27, a young man named Sajib Munshi was seriously injured by a bomb in the clash between the two sides. Later he died while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Dhaka.

Based on that incident, people from both sides clashed again on Wednesday morning. At that time they got down on the ground and started throwing bombs at each other. The surroundings became heavy with the sound of the bomb. Four people were seriously injured in this incident. Later they were rescued and admitted to Jazira Upazila Health Complex.

Jalil Madbar complained and said, “The supporters of Quddus Bepari prepared to attack our people by posting status on Facebook. They broke the arms and legs of one of my supporters named Shahabuddin Sareng this morning. Later our people got the news and resisted them.’

However, denying the allegations, UP Chairman Quddus Bepari said, ‘Jalil Madbar has hired people from other areas to kill our people. Later this morning he created a clash over a trivial incident. One of my men has been seriously injured.’

When asked, District Additional Superintendent of Police (Naria Circle) Ahsan Habib said that several people were injured in the clash between the two sides based on the spread of dominance. Additional police are deployed at the scene. Currently the situation is under control.
