Police have arrested the bus driver who ran over two students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CHUTE).

Bus driver Tajul Islam (49) was arrested from GEC intersection in the city on Wednesday, said Rangunia police station OC Chandan Kumar Chakraborty.

Tajul’s house is in Ward No. 4 of Chikdair Union in Raujan.

OC Chandan Chakraborty told bdnews24.com that the bus was impounded after the accident but the driver escaped. Tajul was arrested from GEC intersection in the morning based on a tip-off.

Last Monday afternoon, two Chuet students were killed in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle on Chittagong-Kaptai road adjacent to Zia Nagar Selina Quader Chowdhury College in Rangunia Upazila of Chittagong. Another seriously injured student has been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The deceased are Shanto Saha of 20th batch and Taufiq Hossain of 21st batch of Chuet Civil Engineering Department.

The bus involved in the accident is 44 years old

The Chittagong-Chandraghona Lichu Bagan route ‘Shah Amanat Paribahan’ bus in which two students of Chuet were killed in a motorcycle collision is 44 years old, Chittagong district BRTA officials said.

Chittagong district BRTA motor vehicle inspector Iqbal Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the bus numbered Chittagong B-05-0227 was registered by BRTA on February 4, 1980. The fitness of the bus expired last February. After that no further renewal application was made.

Third day of siege

Meanwhile, the students of Chuet protested for the third day on Wednesday over the death of two classmates.

Since morning, the students started protesting at the university gate, traffic on that road was stopped.

Chuet authorities, transport owners, labor representatives and student representatives sat in a meeting with Chittagong District Commissioner on Tuesday. There was an assurance of compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victims and Rs 3 lakh to the injured students.

Besides, an investigation committee headed by Additional District Magistrate AKM Golam Morshed Khan was also formed to investigate the incident.

An official of Chuet told bdnews24.com that there were no classes or exams in Chuet due to the students’ movement. An emergency meeting has been called in the afternoon to resolve the crisis.

He said, “They suspended the program on Tuesday night as they accepted several of the demands of the agitating students. But suddenly around 10 am a party started protesting by standing at the gate.”
