Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has warned that immediate organizational measures will be taken if the party directives are not followed to prevent the close relatives and relatives of ministers and MPs from being candidates in the upcoming upazila elections. He gave this warning message at a press conference at the Awami League president’s office in Dhanmondi in the capital on Wednesday (April 24).

Obaidul Quader said, ‘The time for withdrawing candidature in the first phase of the upazila elections has passed. Many of them said that it would have been easier for us to make a decision if we had been informed earlier. Still some have withdrawn their candidature, some have not. Anyone can withdraw their candidature even after the election commission period has expired. We have to wait till the election to finalize this matter. If someone disobeys here, there is an opportunity to take organizational measures in the team, a decision will be taken in time.’

Referring to the issue of disciplinary action in Awami League, the general secretary of the party said, “The party takes disciplinary action at different times with different strategies, considering the activities of each party.” Those who do not withdraw at the final stage, the party’s decision will be taken in time.

The general secretary of Awami League said, ‘Amnesty is a party strategy in a special situation – it can be.’ It can be taken by the party president. There is an opportunity to withdraw the candidacy until the election.

On the day of BNP’s rally, Awami League also announced the rally – when asked about this by journalists, Obaidul Quader said, ‘Awami League gave a program to protect the people from BNP’s terror. If the BNP goes to a one-sided rally, there is a fear of terrorism and fire. As a government party, we have a responsibility to protect people’s lives and property. If we are in the field, they will be psychologically pressured to do these misdeeds – that is why we give programs. We should have a program in the interest of the people to counter BNP’s sneak attack.’

Central Awami League leaders including Awami League Joint General Secretary Afam Bahauddin Nashim, Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque, SM Kamal Hossain, Mirza Azam, Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Sujit Roy Nandi were present in the press conference.
