In Vishwanath, 19 people got symbols including 10 chairman candidates

Voting will be held on May 8 in Sylhet’s diaspora-dominated Vishwanath Upazila Parishad elections. 20 candidates supported by ‘Awami League, BNP and Jamaat’ filed their nomination papers till the last day (April 15) for filing nomination papers for the post of chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairman to contest the election. Amir Nizam Uddin Siddiqui of Upazila Jamaat withdrew his nomination paper according to the party’s decision till the last day of submission of nomination papers.

Zillur Rahman, the returning officer of the district election office handed over symbols to 10 chairman, 6 vice chairman and 3 female vice chairman candidates on Tuesday afternoon.

Candidates officially started campaigning after receiving the symbol. Out of the 19 candidates contesting in the Biswanath Upazila Parishad elections, 8 are expatriates from the United Kingdom and the United States. On May 8, 1 lakh 88 thousand 37 (male 97 thousand 6 and female 91 thousand 31) voters in this upazila consisting of eight unions and one municipality will vote for the candidate of their choice in 74 polling stations for the next 5 years as ‘upazila chairman, vice chairman’. And women will be elected as Vice Chairman.

Among the Awami League candidates for the post of upazila chairman, the symbolized ones are – Zilla Parishad member and Upazila Awami League legal affairs secretary Advocate Gias Uddin Ahmad (Pineapple), Upazila Awami League vice president and UK expatriate Akdduch Ali (Helicopter), UK Awami League executive member and Jubo League.
