The study showed that in 1989, the area covered by rich trees in Dhaka city was 17 percent of the total land area, which is only 2 percent now. This part is again limited to only four areas. The first is the Botanical Gardens and Zoo and the old airport. Second, Sangsad Bhavan and Gana Bhavan. Third, Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Park, Hare Road, Gulistan Park, Osmani Park and Bangabhavan. Fourth, Purbachal New Town Area. Apart from this, some small parks and residential areas have vegetation. The rest of the city has very little vegetation.

A richly wooded area is defined as a place where there are tall trees, shrubs, grasses and a climate suitable for various species of animals. For example, when many areas of Dhaka are lying empty, grass and vines grow there. But in most cases these places also quickly become residential areas. However, in those 30 years, 2 thousand 71 hectares of new tree-covered areas have been created in Dhaka’s residential areas in various ways including planting trees and roof gardens. At the same time, the area decreased by 9 thousand 271 hectares. In that sense, the green area has decreased by a total of 7 thousand hectares.

Professor Mostafizur Rahman of Environmental Science Department of Jahangirnagar University, one of the leaders of the research team, mentioned that there are still many opportunities to plant trees especially in the open spaces of the city, around the playgrounds and wetlands, on both sides of the road.

Professor Mostafizur Rahman thinks that species should also be given importance in planting trees. Trees of such species should be planted, under which grass and vines grow. For example Akashmani, mahogany, rubber, benzene species of trees are not compatible with the soil, water and environment of this country. Such trees play little role in reducing temperature or protecting biodiversity. If there is more planting of native species and fruit trees, it can play a role in both food supply and temperature reduction.
