Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Prannoy Kumar Verma has said that India wants to help build cyclone shelters in vulnerable areas of Bangladesh.

He told reporters after a courtesy meeting with Mohibur Rahman, State Minister of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry at the secretariat on Wednesday (April 24).

The High Commissioner said, we have discussed various issues. This is my first meeting with him, a courtesy call. There is a relationship between the two neighboring countries in terms of climate change, natural disasters. Due to ecological similarities we face similar natural disasters.

Bangladesh is also a member of various global organizations including Disaster Resilient Infrastructure after the coalition. So India-Bangladesh can work together in these areas,’ added Prannoy Verma.

He said that last year the two countries had a secretary level meeting of this ministry. There is institutional relationship between Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Management and our Disaster Management Authority. We also signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2021. We also discussed the implementation of this agreement. For example, it has been said that the two countries will help each other in remote sensing, disaster management programs, training and information exchange.

Indian High Commissioner said, we have expressed interest in working together on remote sensing. We discussed how Bangladesh can be assisted in building cyclone shelters in vulnerable areas. I am very satisfied that the Minister of State has shown interest in implementing all the initiatives.

Meanwhile, the state minister said that India is always with Bangladesh to solve the Rohingya crisis. They are supporting Bangladesh and will continue to do so in the future. Since India and Bangladesh are one in nature, we will work together in future to tackle the problem. We will also work to create a disaster-free generation.

Regarding remote sensing, he said, we will work together in this regard. It has been discussed.
