The temperature in the capital Dhaka is increasing day by day. The temperature in 2017 has reached 37.38 degrees Celsius in 2024. That is, the temperature has increased by more than 3 degrees in the last seven years. Among these, the highest area-wise heat has increased in Mohakhali and Gulistan.

This information is known from the report on the assessment of temperature variation in different areas of Dhaka city for 2017 and 2024 by Center for Atmospheric Pollution Study (CAPS).

According to the report, the average temperature in the area under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in 2017 was 33.39 degrees Celsius. In 2024 it will be 37.38 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, in 2017, the average temperature in different areas of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) was 33.50 degrees Celsius. In 2024, it has increased to 36.54 degrees Celsius.

According to the area based temperature report, the temperature in Motijheel area in summer 2017 was 35.50 degrees Celsius. And in 2024, the temperature in Motijheel increased up to 39.01 degrees Celsius. That is, the temperature in this area has increased by 3.51 degrees Celsius in the last seven years.

On the other hand, in Gulistan, one of the busiest areas of the capital, the temperature was 34 degrees Celsius in 2017, and it reached 40.08 degrees Celsius in 2024. The temperature in Dhanmondi area was 32.50 degrees, in 2024 the temperature in this area increased by 5.54 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, the maximum temperature has increased in Mohakhali area under Dhaka North City Corporation. The temperature in this area in 2017 was 33.50 degrees Celsius. It has reached 41.05 degrees Celsius in 2024. In the last 7 years, the temperature in Mohakhali has increased by about 7 and a half degrees. On the other hand, in Tejgaon, Mirpur-10, Farmgate areas, the temperature has increased by more than 3.5 degrees compared to the last 7 years.

Dr. Atmospheric Pollution Study Center and Stamford University Environmental Science Department Chairman. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumdar told Jago News that the current heat wave is the result of our long-term environmental pollution. It didn’t grow overnight. The recent variation shows that the temperature of Dhaka has increased a lot in the last seven years. In 2017, the temperature of Dhaka was below 34 degrees during summer. Now the average temperature in Dhaka is around 38 degrees Celsius. Along with global climate change, our unplanned urbanization, lack of air circulation, killing of greenery, the temperature of Dhaka is gradually increasing every year.

Professor Kamruzzaman also said that we have deactivated the factors that are needed to survive from intense heat. The presence of reservoirs and greenery generally keeps an area cool. But according to the size of our city, we don’t have that amount of reservoirs and greenery. Air flow is not good due to unplanned building construction. If these things were right, our temperature would be somewhat bearable.
