DU sent a letter to artist Murtaza Bashir 2 years after his death

Two years after his death, Dhaka University (DU) authorities have sent a letter to the famous artist Murtaza Bashir requesting him to participate in the teacher recruitment process.

Two daughters of the artist have expressed their anger in this incident. A letter has already been sent to the university authorities on behalf of the family.

Murtaza Bashir, one of the stars of the art industry, died on August 15, 2020 due to coronavirus.

On Tuesday, a letter was sent from the Registrar’s Office of DU to the address of Murtaza Bashir in the capital’s Manipuri neighborhood to be on the selection board for the post of associate professor in the sculpture department of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

The letter states, “A meeting of the Selection Board for appointment of an Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture will be held on Monday 03.10.2022 at 4 PM in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor following hygiene and social distancing guidelines.

“You are kindly requested to attend this meeting as an honorable member of the Selection Board.”

Highlighting various aspects of the appointment, the letter said, “If due to unavoidable reasons you are unable to attend the meeting, then you are requested to send your written opinion about the promotion of the candidate directly or in a sealed envelope to the Vice-Chancellor.”

When asked, Murtaza Bashir’s daughter Munira Bashir told, “Such letters have been received from Dhaka University before. We have informed them. This letter has arrived by courier today as well.

“I couldn’t bear to receive today’s letter. Later I told my sister, she sent them an e-mail. It’s not right. It should be protested. Why would they be so irresponsible?”

In the letter sent to Dhaka University, Muniza Bashir, another daughter of the artist, wrote, “It is unfortunate that institutions like Dhaka University do not know the news of Murtaza Bashir’s death!!!!”

Earlier, Munira expressed her anger about the ‘mismanagement’ of the university with a post on her Facebook account.

In that post, he also published a letter signed by Nasima Haque Mitu, Chairperson of the Sculpture Department of Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University last month.

In the letter, Assistant Professor Nasima Haque applied for promotion as Associate Professor.

In a Facebook post, Munira Bashir writes, “What should be done? Father will attend the meeting from the grave and give a written opinion? What should be done in this mismanagement of Dhaka University? What should be abused?

“Prabir Kumar Sarkar has become the new registrar (acting) of Dhaka University, will he be accountable?”
