Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952. Although the head of state of Britain is the Queen, the government of the United Kingdom is in the hands of the Prime Minister. During Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign, the United Kingdom had 16 prime ministers.

Of the 16 Prime Ministers Queen Elizabeth II has had, 11 are from the Conservative Party, five from the Labor Party.

When the Queen ascended the throne in 1952, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was the leader of the Conservative Party, Winston Churchill. He was the head of government till 1955. Then Anthony Eden of the same party became the Prime Minister of the country. He remained the head of government till 1957.

Harold Macmillan was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1957 to 1963. In 1963–64, Alec Douglas-Home took over the post. Both were leaders of the Conservative Party. Then in 1964 the Labor leader Harold Wilson became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1970, Wilson was succeeded by Conservative Party leader Edward Heath. He was the Prime Minister till 1974.

After Heath, Labor leader Harold Wilson returned to the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1974. He was replaced two years later by James Callaghan of the same team. He was the head of government till 1979. In the same year, Margaret Thatcher became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She is the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. John Major took the post in 1990 after the 11-year prime ministership of Conservative Party leader Thatcher. Major, the leader of the Conservative Party, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997.

Tony Blair was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1997. Blair, the leader of the Labor Party, was at No. 10 Downing Street until 2007. Blair was succeeded by Gordon Brown. The leader of the Labor Party was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010. Then David Cameron of the Conservative Party was in power from 2010 to 2016.

Cameron’s successor is Theresa May. In 2016, this leader of the Conservative Party was elected the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She is the second woman Prime Minister of the country. When May left in 2019, Boris of the same party became the prime minister. Liz Truss took over as the new Prime Minister last Tuesday after a little more than two years in charge of Boris. Through this, Queen Elizabeth II met 16 Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom before her death at the age of 96.
