The US State Department has approved a potential $1.1 billion sale of military equipment to Taiwan, including 60 ship destroyers and 100 surface-to-air missiles. In response to this US action, China has threatened to take countermeasures. The Pentagon announced a new package of weapons for Taipei last Friday in the wake of China’s aggressive military exercises around the self-ruled island, following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last month.
Pelosi is the highest-ranking US politician to visit Taiwan in decades. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the weapons to be sold to Taiwan include Sidewinder missiles that can be used for air-to-air and ground attacks. Its cost is estimated at 85.6 million dollars. In addition, Harpoon anti-ship missiles will cost an estimated $35.5 million and support for Taiwan’s surveillance radar program will cost approximately $6654 million. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, warned that the potential arms sale would seriously damage Sino-US relations and stability across the Taiwan Strait. “China will take legal and appropriate countermeasures in response to such a situation,” he said.
