Sharmin-Tanya arrested while returning from Canada for a family function

RAB claimed that Sharmin Ahmed (42) and Tania Ahmed (37), associates of PK Halder, who embezzled about Tk 200 crore from People’s Leasing and Finance Company while leaving the country, came from Canada to attend a family function. RAB arrested two of them from Shyamoli and Dhanmondi areas of the capital on Wednesday morning. RAB claimed that Sharmin and Tanya were arrested while trying to leave for Canada again.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the agency’s law and media wing, gave this information at a press conference organized at RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar in the capital today. Tinin said, ‘Khabir Uddin, the former director of People’s Leasing, took a loan of Tk 200 crore in the name of family members. But, no one paid the loan. Khabir Uddin’s two daughters Sharmin and Tanya have been staying in Canada since 2003. They may have come to the country while taking loans. Sharmin 31 KT and Tanya embezzled the customer’s money with a loan of 33 crores.

Khandaker Al Moin said they came to the country on July 28 to attend a family function. They were in hiding for so long. They planned to leave for Canada early this morning. Earlier, their goods were brought to Shahjalal International Airport by ambulance. At first they hid their identities during the arrest.

It was informed in the press conference that their father Khabir Uddin is on bail. They were asked to appear in court on April 19 this year. But, they ignore it. After their arrest, Sharmin and Tania gave information about their involvement in taking loans for embezzlement from various financial institutions during preliminary interrogation.

Khandaker Al Moin said, ‘The two arrested during interrogation said that they took the loan through their father Khabir Uddin, the former director of the company. They will be sent to court today.’
