Lok Sabha Election 2024 | Know the political situation of Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency dgtls

--

The hill climate is suitable for tea cultivation but not for grass. So far, the ruling Trinamool has not won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat even though it has hoisted victory flags everywhere in Bengal. Even though the lotus blossomed three times in a row, BJP could not do it alone. Every victory required the support of the hill team. This time too, BJP is fighting with the support of Subas Ghising’s Gorkha National Liberation Front. Bimal Gurung’s Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is also with Padmashibir.

Hill politics has witnessed fee-based transfer of power. After independence Congress was in power but later CPM took over Pahar. But not alone, the support of the regional party had to be taken. And because that support changes again and again, sometimes the Left, sometimes the Congress goes like this. However, in 1996, 1998 and 1999, the CPM won by-polls. But the MP changes with every vote. Same happened with BJP. Jashwant Singh became an MP in 2009 when the BJP captured the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat won by the Congress in 2004. But next time BJP changed candidate. In 2014, Surendra Singh Ahluwalia became a minister at the center after becoming an MP. Again in 2019, Ahluwalia was nominated in Burdwan-Durgapur and BJP brought Raju Bista, originally from Manipur, to Darjeeling. Raju is the candidate again this time but another name was heard for a while. Even as there were speculations that former foreign secretary Harshvardhan Shringla was the candidate, a ‘confident’ Raju, however, said, “BJP won’t change candidates this time.”

That has actually happened. Raju is fighting against Trinamool’s Gopal Lama. But Raju also has a ‘thorn’ in Darjeeling. He is the party’s MLA Vishnuprasad Sharma. BJP MLA Vishnuprasad demanded that the party give ticket to a ‘Bhoomiputra’ in the hills. The BJP MLA of Karshiang is standing against the party’s candidate as an independent. However, it cannot be said that Darjeeling is a ‘difficult’ seat for Raju. The reason for this is the result of the last Lok Sabha and 2021 assembly elections.

In 2014, BJP won Darjeeling by 1,97,239 votes. In 2019, Raju increased that margin to 4,13,443 votes. BJP’s vote share went from 42.73 to 59.19 percent. The Trinamool vote was roughly the same. In 2019, Trinamool polled 26.56 percent votes in Darjeeling.

But as a result of the last assembly elections, the BJP lost a little in Darjeeling. Their votes decreased to 43.68 percent. There Trinamool votes increased to 31.37 percent. The BJP was leading in six assembly constituencies in the Lok Sabha. Trinamool wins only in Chopra. Apart from retaining Chopra Trinamool in the assembly elections, the BGPM candidate supported by the party won in Kalimpong.

As these statistics show, the political balance is constantly changing, like the weather in the mountains. It is impossible to tell when there will be clouds, when it will rain and when there will be bright sunshine. Just as the Trinamool, which could calm the turbulent hills, thought it would win the former captain of the Indian football team, Vaichung Bhutia. But it didn’t happen. But if BJP wins this time, a new record will be created. This is the first time a team will win in Darjeeling four times in a row. Raju will be the first to achieve the feat of becoming an MP twice consecutively on the ticket of the same party.
