Mart kept in touch with Elfriede even after returning to Estonia. In January 2013, he told Elfriede about his heart. Mart tells Elfriede that he has fallen in love with her. He was 37 at the time and Elfriede was 92.

“I never had a grandparent-grandchild relationship with Elfriede,” Mart said. Never called her grandma. Elfriede is a modernist woman. We both loved each other. He used to take care of me.

Mart was working as a lawyer in Estonia. But he quit his job because he wanted to be with Elfriede. He started applying for a visa to stay permanently in Australia.

Mart’s visa application was rejected in December 2018. He faced the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia for resolution. The tribunal could not believe that Mart had a relationship with a 55-year-old woman. Mart was asked various questions about his personal life.

The young man was also questioned about whether Elfriede had a sexual relationship with Mart. “We have never discussed this issue,” he said. We have never been in the same bedroom together. I held her hand, hugged her, kissed her and caressed her. But I didn’t have sex. The bonds of our relationship are beyond that.”

Regarding the age gap, Mert said, “A lot of people have a headache about age when it comes to love. But that problem is one-sided. It is practiced only if her boyfriend is younger than her. Where, on the contrary, people do not say anything! I don’t accept all this.”

Mart and Elfriede started living together from September 2018. At that time Elfriede was 98 and Mart was 43. Elfriede was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Apart from losing hearing and sight, he became depressed.

In September 2022, Elfriede was taken to a nursing home on the orders of doctors. Mart visited Elfriede there every day. Sometimes chocolate was given as a gift to the lover, sometimes Elfriede’s favorite berries.

Mart and Elfriede would go to concerts together, or spend time with each other in a coffee shop. Mart also took Elfriede to the doctor.

Elfriede sometimes screamed in his sleep. He had nightmares about World War II. Mart said that although he and Elfriede lived in the same house, they slept in separate rooms. He jokingly said that Elfriede’s snoring was bothering him.

Elfriede breathed his last at a Sydney hospital on Saturday afternoon local time. He was 104 years old at the time of his death. 48-year-old Mart is devastated by the death of his lover. The tribunal will rule in May on whether he should remain in Australia or return to Estonia.
