After the assembly, the BJP set a precedent of winning the Lok Sabha seat unopposed this time. Arunachal Pradesh followed by Gujarat. BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal has been assured of an unopposed victory in the Surat seat in the state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

On Sunday, the nomination of Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani from that center in South Gujarat was cancelled. On Monday, the remaining eight opposition candidates of the seat withdrew their nominations. Incidentally, the BJP has won unopposed seven of the 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal this month. Assembly polls were held on April 19 along with the Lok Sabha in that northeastern state.

On May 7, all 26 constituencies of Gujarat will go to polls in one round. Monday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations. Dalal’s victory was confirmed as eight other candidates withdrew their nominations. Earlier, the returning officer had canceled the nomination of Nilesh, the Congress candidate from that center, alleging that there was a discrepancy in the signatures of the proposers in the nomination papers.

There is no precedent in Indian politics of winning a Lok Sabha seat unopposed in recent times. National Conference candidate Farooq Abdullah won the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir unopposed in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections. In 2012, Samajwadi Party’s Dimple Yadav won the Kanauj Lok Sabha by-election in Uttar Pradesh unopposed. Dimple’s husband Akhilesh Yadav resigned as MP from Kanauj after being elected Chief Minister following the Samajwadi Party’s victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls that year.
