President Mohammad Muijju’s People’s National Congress (PNC) won a big victory in the parliamentary elections in Maldives. The deterioration of that country’s bilateral relations with India did not have much of an impact on Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Many people say that the citizens of Maldives voted for Muijju’s party because of his love for China.

According to media reports, polling was held in 93 constituencies in Maldives on Sunday. As per the counting results till 11 pm Indian time, counting of votes for the first 86 constituencies has been completed. Muijju’s party won 66 of those 86 seats. Which is much more than the magic number. In Sunday’s election, Muijju’s party was mainly contested by the country’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). It is clear from the results that MDP could not make a dent in the parliamentary elections.

The parliamentary elections in Maldives were of particular importance to international observers. Many countries of the world were watching this election. Muijju won by defeating the former president of that country, Ibrahim Mohammed Soli, last September. But Soli’s party, the MDP, retains a majority in parliament. As a result, many decisions could not be implemented by the Muizzur government due to the ‘blockage’ of the Parliament. So by winning this vote they wanted to maintain an absolute majority in the Maldivian Parliament as well.

The parliamentary elections of Maldives are going on, the countrymen will decide on the ‘opposition to India’ policy of the Muijju government

According to diplomatic circles, this election became the center of attraction mainly for two reasons. The election was setting the stage to test the acceptability of Muijju’s ‘anti-India stance’ and ‘closer-to-China policy’ with the Maldivian people.

The Maldives government’s relations with India have gradually deteriorated over the past few months. Muijju is known to be pro-China and anti-India. Bilateral relations between Maldives and India have deteriorated since he came to power. Allegations of insulting remarks against the Prime Minister of India were made against three ministers of Muizju. After that there was a call for a boycott of Maldives on Indian social media. Many people canceled their tickets to Maldives. Due to which the country has faced financial loss. Muijju has already increased closeness with China. He even ordered the withdrawal of Indian troops from Maldives. About which there was no less controversy. Eventually, the Indian government began the process of withdrawing troops from the Maldives. The parliamentary election of that country came in this situation. Maldivian opposition parties also campaigned against the Muijju government’s anti-India stance. But nothing could stand in the way of Moijju’s party getting an absolute majority in Parliament.
