The United States and the United Kingdom have imposed a new round of sanctions on the Palestinian independence organization Hamas. After the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, these two countries, Israel’s allies, imposed sanctions on Hamas, the ruling party in the Gaza Strip, for the third time. The British news agency Reuters reported this information in a report on Tuesday (November 14).
According to Reuters, on Tuesday, the United States imposed sanctions targeting senior member and co-founder of Hamas, Mahmoud Khaled Zahhar, representative of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Damascus-based deputy secretary general and leader of the military branch. Apart from this, Washington has also targeted the owner and founder of Lebanon-based money exchange company Nabil Chouman & Company.
After such actions of the United States, the British government added the names of six people associated with Hamas to the list of anti-terror sanctions of the United Kingdom. Among them are four leaders of Hamas.
In a statement on Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US would continue to work with other partners, including the UK, to curb the rise of Hamas and its ability to fund its atrocities.
He said that the activities of Hamas have brought great suffering to the people. At the same time, their actions have shown that terrorism does not occur in isolation. Together with our partners, we will destroy Hamas’ financial infrastructure, cut them off from foreign funding and cut off new funding channels.
Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union and Britain. The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on the organization for the third time since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.
