At least 36 construction workers are feared trapped after an under-construction tunnel collapsed in India’s Uttarakhand.
Rescue workers are working to open the tunnel and bring out the trapped workers safely.
A part of the under-construction tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi district on Sunday morning. The collapse occurred about 200 meters from the entrance of the tunnel.
The tunnel was being built from Silkiara to Dandalgaon in Uttarakhand. The tunnel was being built with the aim of connecting the Yamunatri with the Hindu pilgrimage site of North Kashi.
The accident happened there on the day of Diwali. Initial reports said workers were working about 2,800 meters inside the tunnel entrance. About 200 meters away from the entrance, a 150-meter-long section collapsed, NDTV said.
Oxygen is being supplied to those trapped inside the rubble. Officials said that although the workers have oxygen cylinders, additional oxygen is being sent for their safety and life.
Oxygen is being supplied through pipes. The four-and-a-half-kilometer long tunnel was being built that could be used in all seasons.
The chief minister of Uttarakhand has expressed concern over the tunnel collapse. He said, “I am praying to God that everyone should return safely. ”
