Construction of a four-and-a-half kilometer long tunnel was underway to connect Silkyara and Dandangaon in Uttarakhand. Through this, Yamunatri was being connected with the Hindu pilgrimage site of North Kashi. The night shift workers were coming out after work on Sunday morning. The accident occurred when the day shift workers were entering.
Uttarakhand disaster department official Durgesh Rathodi said that about 200 meters of the tunnel collapsed. 36 workers are trapped inside. Oxygen is being supplied to them through the rubble. But the rescue operation is hampered as the remaining debris falls on the rescuers.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on social media X (formerly Twitter), praying to God to bring out the trapped workers safely.
A police official told news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) that they are very hopeful of getting the trapped workers out safely. However, it is difficult to say how long it will take.
