After more than a month and a half, Russia launched a massive attack on the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. Kyiv has been hit by Russian airstrikes for the first time in 52 days, city officials said.
Residents of the city were asked to take shelter in safe places during the attack. British media BBC reported this information in a report on Saturday (November 11).
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that “loud explosions were heard” during the attack, which took place early Saturday morning. Klitschko said, according to preliminary information, the air defense system of Ukraine was able to intercept these Russian missiles.
Meanwhile, residents were ordered to take shelter in air raid shelters during the Russian attack. Reuters reported that there were no initial reports of casualties after the airstrike.
The attack came as President Volodymyr Zelensky marked the first anniversary of Kherson’s liberation from Russia, the BBC said. Speaking to residents of the city, the Ukrainian president praised Ukrainians for ‘inspiring the world with their resistance’.
Meanwhile, at least two missile strikes were reported in the coastal district of Odessa, about 275 miles (442 km) from Kiev. According to Oleg Kiper, the head of the region’s administration, three people were injured in the attack and a 96-year-old woman was hospitalized. His condition is said to be stable.
Earlier on Wednesday, Russia launched a missile attack on a civilian ship in the Black Sea. At least one person was killed. The ship, which was attacked by Russia, was a Liberian flag and was heading to the Ukrainian port of Odessa on the Black Sea coast.
According to Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces, the Liberian-flagged ship was attacked with an anti-radar missile. The ship’s 43-year-old harbor pilot died in the attack.
