In the civil war that started from the beginning of last week, a large area bordering China has already been lost to the Myanmar army. The alliance of three militant groups claims that the Myanmar-China road is now under their control. Even in Kalay town of Sagiang province in West Myanmar, face-to-face fighting has started.

The United Nations Human Rights Organization reported on Friday that at least 90,000 people have left their homes in fear of the army-rebel conflict. According to local sources, that number has already crossed 1 lakh. The border town of Chinshoehau, known as the ‘hub’ of Sino-Myanmar trade, had already been captured by an alliance of three rebel groups. They also attacked the offices of some Chinese commercial companies there. Concerned over the situation, Beijing appealed to the rebel forces for a ceasefire on Thursday. But there was no response. Myanmar’s pro-democracy forces’ self-proclaimed ‘National Unity Government’ has already sided with the rebels.

Incidentally, in February 2021, Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party ‘National League for Democracy’ led by the Myanmar army seized power through a coup d’état. The two-and-a-half-year-old military government is believed to be facing such a major crisis for the first time. Myant Shwe, president of Myanmar’s State Administration Council (SAC), expressed concern over the situation, saying, “Without quick, effective action, our country could be torn apart.”
