Trinamool MP Mahua Maitra crossed the threshold of ‘decency’ in the Ethics Committee meeting of Parliament. BJP MP Aparajita Sharangi complained. Mahua was summoned by the Parliament’s Ethics Committee on Thursday in the ‘bribery question’ case. Aparajita was also on the panel where the committee members spoke to Mahua.
Opposition MPs including Mahua walked out of the ethics committee meeting on Thursday. Mahua said he was asked ‘personal and unethical’ questions. Mahua also wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that he was verbally ‘undressed’ through questions. BJP MP Aparajita dismissed his allegations on Friday. He said, “Mahua went beyond all decency. We called Mahua. He was supposed to answer all the questions. The chairman of the committee only asked questions based on the affidavit given by Darshan Hiranandani. So there is no question of delimitation or going beyond the affidavit.”
In a letter to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mahua said that the ethics committee was verbally ‘disrobed’
Aparajita further alleged that Mahua was talking more about personal matters. Aparajita said, “When the chairman asked some questions based on the affidavit, Mahua got angry. Aparajita did not stop there. In his words, “He was very arrogant in his manner. He was very rough. He has tried to mislead the people of the country by making false statements. He presented himself as a victim of harassment.”
Opposition MPs including Mahua walked out of the ethics committee meeting on Thursday. Opposition MPs said the meeting had asked ‘personal and unethical’ questions. Mahua alleged that he put his hand on the cheek during the meeting. It has also been talked about ‘badly’. In his words, “They were catching everything. He was talking bad. They say, ‘Tears in your eyes’. Are my eyes watering? Can you see?” Another opposition MP said while walking out of the meeting, “It was too much.” According to the sources, in which hotel Mahua was at night, with whom she spoke, the head of the committee and BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar also asked questions about such ‘personal’ matters. However, Sonkar, on behalf of the committee, said that Mahua did not cooperate with the committee or the investigation. Exit to skip further questions. He also claimed that Mahua had used some ‘offensive words’ in the meeting.
