In Hinduism, it is believed that during Pitra Paksha, all the ancestors from Jamaloka come to earth and expect their family members to perform Shraddha, Tarpan or Pinddan etc.
Hinduism believes that when someone dies they take on the form of a father to protect their descendants. Shraddha is performed not only to liberate the ancestors but also to pay homage to them. It is said that paying homage to the ancestors in the paternal side gets their blessings.
It is considered auspicious to offer Tarpan to the ancestors on behalf of the father. Mantra must be recited while offering Tarpan. Mantras related to ancestors should be chanted without a priest on the day of Mahalaya.
Tarpan Mantra for Father : Gotre Asmatpitha (Father’s Name) Sharma Vasurupat Tripyatamidam Tilodakam Ganga Jalam Bha Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah.
Prayer Mantra for Mother : Gotre Asmanmata (Mother’s Name) Devi Vasurupasta Tripyatamidam Tilodakam Ganga Jale Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah.
Tarpan Mantra for Grandfather: Gotre Asmatpitamah (Grandfather’s Name) Sharma Vasurupat Tripyatamidam Tilodakam Ganga Jalam Bha Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah.
Mantra for offering water for grandmother’s tarpan: Gotre pitam (grandmother’s name) devi vasurupast tripatyamidam tilodkam ganga jale tasmai swadha namah, tasmai swadha namah, tasmai swadha namah.
Pitru Gayatri Mantra : According to astrology, if you are unable to recite individual mantras, you can recite Pitru Gayatri for the salvation of your ancestors. Reciting Pitru Gayatri Mantra also appeases the souls of ancestors. Pitru Gayatri Mantra: Om pitruganaya vidamhe jagat dharini dhimahi tanno pitro prachodayat. Devatabhaya: Pitrubhayascha Mahayogibhaya and Ch. Namah Swahaye Swadayai Nityameva Namo Namah. Adya-Bhutay Vidamhe Sarva-Sevaya Dhimahi. Shiva-Shakti-constituted Pitra-Deva Prachodayat.
