US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will discuss tensions in Taiwan on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Session in New York. The US State Department reported this information. The meeting is part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and conduct competition responsibly, the US State Department said.
Tensions between the two countries rose after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last month and President Joe Biden’s clear pledge to defend the autonomous island, which China claims as its territory. Shortly before the talks with Blinken, Wang again expressed anger at US support for the island of Taiwan. Wang said in a speech at the Asia Society that Taiwan is becoming the biggest risk to Sino-US relations. If it is mishandled, it has the potential to destroy the relationship between China and the US. Just as the United States will not allow Hawaii to be taken away, China has the right to maintain the country’s unification. Discussions between Blinken and Wang are expected to lay the groundwork for a meeting between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The meeting is likely to take place at the G-20 summit in Bali in November.
