Russia-backed separatists announced referendums Friday through Tuesday (September 23-27) in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia provinces, which make up about 15 percent of Ukraine’s territory, or an area the size of Hungary.
Election officials will go door to door with portable ballot boxes to poll.
Russia’s aggression has slowed somewhat in recent months and Ukraine has retaken parts of the northeast. Now Russian-backed officials in the east and south say they want a vote on joining Russia.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been at war for the past seven months. Many civilians have lost their lives in the fierce fighting between the two countries. Women and children were also killed. The referendum had been under discussion among Moscow authorities for months. But since Ukraine recently recaptured several areas, their organization is accelerating.
The result is believed to be inevitable for Russia in the polls, which started on Friday. In 2014, Crimean referendum was rigged and criticized internationally. 97 percent of the vote was in favor of formal annexation with Russia.
