Nilphamari, September 23, 2022 (BSS): After the prime minister’s directive to keep the land fallow, the foundation seed of Aush paddy has been produced in the Doma foundation seed potato production farm of BADC.
Aush paddy has been planted on 240 acres of land for the first time in that farm which only produces seed potatoes. From which the stakeholders are expecting to produce 350 tons of basic rice seeds.
Farm authorities say that 35 thousand acres of land can be planted with that amount of seeds. Also about 70 tons of paddy will be available. The market value of which is above 2 crore rupees. Untimely extensive cultivation of paddy has created a surprise in the area. Seeing the fields full of ripe rice, the farmers of the area are interested in Aush cultivation.
It is a specialized farm of BADC on 650 acres of land for production of basic seed potatoes. Every year, after potato cultivation, wheat cultivation was done on a limited scale. After that, these lands remained fallow for a long time. Under the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ‘One inch of land will not fall’, Bina-21, Bri-48 and Bri-98 varieties of rice have been planted in 240 acres of land for the production of Aush base seeds. Aman has also been planted in 53 acres of land. By doing this, the cultivation of these idle lands will on the one hand alleviate the shortage of drought tolerant Aush paddy seeds, on the other hand, it will create employment opportunities for agricultural laborers who are unemployed during the inter-boro aman season. An untimely crop production in the farm will bring additional income. On the other hand, the fertility of the land will increase, the weeds will be less in the land, the cultivation of the land will be less in the seed potato plantation, and the diseases will be reduced.
Subrata Majumder, assistant director of the farm, said, “Earlier, there were two crops in the farm land in a year. One is the base seed potato, the other is wheat. Now three crops are being produced in a year as Aush Bij paddy cultivation has started.’
He said that currently the ripe paddy of the land is being harvested and threshed. It is expected to produce 350 tons of seed paddy as the yield is good on 240 acres of land. Also 60 to 70 tons of paddy will be available. The price of each ton of seed rice is 50 thousand rupees, the selling price of which is more than 2 crore rupees. Between 2 and 300 workers in the area have been employed in paddy cultivation. By this, on one hand, the shortage of Aush seed rice will be reduced, on the other hand, employment opportunities will be created for agricultural laborers who are out of work between the Boro and Aman seasons, and an additional crop will be produced in the farm in an untimely manner.
Zahedul Islam (50), a farmer of Khaturia village in Sonarai union of Domar upazila, said the farm is near my house. I saw the plantation of Aush rice there for the first time. Seeing the yield of paddy, many farmers in the area are leaning towards Aush cultivation.
Reyazul Islam (30), a farm worker of Khamatpara village of Sonara union, said, ‘We have 250 to 300 workers working on the farm for a daily wage of Tk 500. If I have work I get salary, if I don’t I don’t. Every year at this time there is no work on the farm. As a result, we spent our days in poverty. This time, I am able to work because the farm is planted with fresh rice, and the scarcity has also ended.’
Deputy Director of Doma Base Seed Potato Farm. Abu Taleb Mia told BASS, “Due to cultivation of seed potatoes in the farm, various diseases are increasing. Cultivation of potato in that land after Aush cultivation will reduce bacterial diseases. Besides, the crisis of quality Aush seeds will be cut.
He said that there is no cost of irrigation in Aush Abad. Being drought tolerant, it does not require much irrigation except rainwater, yield is good. Paddy yield can be raised within 115 days. Weeds are less in the field, it is possible to plant on higher ground.
Meanwhile, according to the sources of the District Agricultural Extension Office, the cultivation of Aush paddy is decreasing every year in the district even though it is profitable. 1 thousand 595 hectares of land has been cultivated in the district this year. In 2021, 1 thousand 695 and 1 thousand 745 hectares of land were planted in 2020.
In this regard, the Deputy Director of the District Agriculture Extension Department said. Abu Bakr Siddiq told Bass, “Farmers are always looking for profit, they are cultivating corn because the profit is more than rice. But aush cultivation does not require much fertile land. Irrigation is very low. Because of that the production cost is also low. Farmers will be more profitable if they cultivate winter vegetables including potatoes in advance on that land. We are encouraging the farmers to increase the cultivation of Aush paddy.
