The court sentenced nine people to life imprisonment in a murder case in Faridpur.
Faridpur Additional District and Sessions Judge 1st Court Judge Ashok Kumar Dutta gave this order around 2 pm on Wednesday.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each accused. In default of payment of fine, each accused will have to undergo two more months of imprisonment without labour.
The accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, they were taken to prison.
The convicts are – Babar Ali (73), Md. Saddam Hussain (33), Masood Sheikh (53), Mahmud Sheikh (43), Tepu Sheikh (58), Jewel Sheikh (33), Sattar Sheikh (83), Abu Taleb Sheikh (43) and Syed Napur Ali (38). All of them are residents of Atakbana village of Bana union of Alfadanga upazila.
According to the source of the case, two sides clashed on June 21, 2013, over the appointment of a mosque imam in that village. A man named Mahfuzar Sheikh (40) was injured and died under treatment.
In this incident, Mahfuzar Sheikh’s uncle Moktar Sheikh (76) filed a case against 10 people in Alfadanga Police Station as the plaintiff.
Alfadanga Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sirajul Islam submitted the charge sheet to the court on April 29, 2014 accusing all 10 people involved in the protest. However, Abu Bakkar Sheikh (50) died during the course of the case. As a result, the court removed his name from the list of accused.
Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the court Nawab Ali confirmed the truth of the incident.
