Dhaka, September 21, 2022 (BSS): The High Court upheld the death sentence of five accused in the Kushtia van driver Abu Bakr Siddique murder case.
Of the six accused, the death sentence of the remaining one was commuted to life imprisonment.
Justice Sheikh Md. A High Court Division Bench consisting of Zakir Hossain and Justice AKM Zahirul Haque passed the verdict today.
The court gave this verdict after hearing the death reference and appeal to approve the death sentence.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta represented the state in the court. He informed BASS about the court verdict.
Lawyers SM Shahjahan and AKM Fazlul Haque Khan Farid appeared for the accused. As one of the defendants was absconding, he was represented by the state-appointed lawyer Md. Hafizur Rahman Khan. Van driver Abu Bakkar Siddique of Jotpara village of Ziarkhi Union of Kushtia Sadar Upazila left the van at home on the evening of June 10, 2012 and sat at a tea shop. At around 10 pm, the accused called Abu Bakkar and took him to a nearby field and brutally killed him with sharp weapons. The police recovered his body from Jotpara Kanchikhali field around 7 am the next day.
After the trial of the case in this incident, on February 7, 2017, Additional District and Sessions Judge First Court Judge Reza Alamgir Hasan sentenced six accused to death.
The convicts are: Sajjad, Majed, Shukchad, Rashidul Islam, Kalai and Mancher Ali. Accused Rashidul Islam is absconding.
Later the death reference is sent to the High Court for approval of the death sentence as per rules. Besides, the accused appealed and jailed.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta said, after hearing the death reference and appeal, the High Court Division reduced the death sentence of Kalai alias Jalil to life imprisonment, taking into account all the evidence and evidence. He approved the death sentence of five others.
