Purulia, 21 September: Rail Blocked by Kurmi community demanding Scheduled Tribe Status. The agitators are continuing the blockade and dharna for more than 24 hours at various stations including Kustaur of Adra Division of South Eastern Railways. The protest is going on on the railway line. On the second day of protests today, thousands of people blocked railways at Kharagpur, Khemasuli and Purulia stations of the South Eastern Railway. The agitation has affected train services in several parts of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Purulia-Barakar state highway has also been blocked. Road and rail communication has been disrupted.

Apart from Bengal, the movement is also going on in Jharkhand and Odisha. The agitators demanded that the Kurmi tribe should be listed as a Scheduled Tribe. The Kurmali language should be listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and the Sarna Dharma Code should be introduced immediately. The protestors are clear that the rail and road blockade will continue until their demands are met.

Kurmi Samaj chief leader Ajit Prasad Mahato said, “This movement is for the demand of listing our Scheduled Tribes. The rail and road blockade will continue till the demand is met.
