The High Court upheld the death sentence of four militants of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi.

Those sentenced to death are Masud Rana alias Mamun alias Mantri of Pashua Tangailpara of Peergacha upazila, Liton Mia alias Rafiq of Gabtali area of ​​Bogra, Ahsan Ullah Ansari alias Biplab of Makar Rajmalli area of ​​Rajarhat of Kurigram, a student of Begum Rokeya University and Sakhawat Hossain of Char area of ​​Haldiya in Saghata of Gaibandhar. Convicted Biplab is absconding. Abu Saeed (28) of Kaliganj Bazar in Pirgacha was acquitted earlier as the murder charge was not proved beyond doubt.

At the same time, the court acquitted Ishahak Ali from the case as the charge of murder was not proved.

Wednesday (September 21) Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan High Court bench announced the verdict.

The hearing of the death reference and the appeal of the accused to approve the death sentence of five militants of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi ended on September 19. At the end of the hearing, the verdict was fixed today.

Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morsed heard on behalf of the state in the court. He was assisted by Assistant Attorney General A Manna, Zakir Hossain Masud and Nirmal Kumar Das. Lawyer Ahsan Ullah was the defendant.

Earlier, the hearing of the death reference and the appeal of the accused started to approve the death sentence of five JMB militants for the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur on September 4.

On February 28, 2017, Rangpur Special Judge Naresh Chandra Sarkar sentenced five JMB militants to death for killing Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi.

Later the death reference (document for approving the death sentence) is sent to the High Court. Besides, the accused appealed and jailed.

Out of the eight accused in the charge sheet, two others were killed in the gunfight and the verdict was pronounced by dropping them from the charges in the case. Among them, Nazrul Islam alias Hasan alias Bike Hasan of Gajpuri area of ​​Debiganj, Panchgarh was killed in Rajshahi on August 1 before the complaint was filed and Saddam Hossain alias Rahul alias Chanchal alias Sabuj alias Ravi of Char Vidyanand area of ​​Rajarhat, Kurigram was killed in gunfight at Mohammadpur embankment in Dhaka after the complaint was filed.

On August 7, 2016, the investigation officer of the case, Kaunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Quader Jilani filed a charge sheet against the eight JMB militants in the court of Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate.

Later, when the case was transferred to the court of Special Judge Naresh Chandra Sarkar in Rangpur, on November 15, 2016, judicial proceedings were started by forming charges against seven accused.

In the case, the court accepted the testimony of 55 witnesses of the plaintiff and one witness of the accused.

It is to be noted that on the morning of October 3, 2015, Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio was shot dead in the Alutari area of ​​Kaunia Upazila by the militants of the banned militant organization JMB.
