Every four seconds a person in the world is dying of hunger, said the terrible information of the Beskari development organizations. More than two hundred non-food development organizations (NGOs) have called for vigilance in dealing with food crises in the world.
238 human development NGOs from 75 countries published an open letter to the attention of world leaders on Tuesday (September 20) ahead of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, USA. It also includes international organizations like Oxfam, Save the Children, Plan International. Organizations have expressed outrage as world hunger is skyrocketing.
According to a statement from the organizations, 345 million people in the world are struggling with extreme hunger. This number is more than double compared to 2019.
They say, ‘There will never be another famine in the 21st century, despite promises by world leaders, Somalia is once again in fear. 50 million people in 45 countries around the world are on the brink of starvation’.
NGOs also say that 19,700 people die every day due to extreme hunger in the world. As such, one person dies every four seconds in the world.
The statement was signed by Mohanna Ahmed Ali Al-Jabali on behalf of Yemen Family Care Association. He said, ‘The agricultural sector has been modernized all over the world. Modern technology of crop production and harvesting is being used. Yet in the 21st century we are suffering from food shortages. We have to talk about the famine situation. It’s sad’.
He also said that it is not related to a country or a continent and there is not just one cause of hunger. It is unfair to all humanity.
He added that we should not wait another moment to focus on providing life-saving food and long-term assistance.
According to NGOs, the corona pandemic is the effect of the long-term Ukraine-Russia war. At the same time, poverty, social injustice, gender inequality, conflict, climate change and economic crisis, rising food prices have all contributed to the global hunger crisis.
But Russia and Ukraine are the world’s third and fourth largest grain exporters. At the same time, Russia is the top exporter of fuel and fertilizers.
Ukraine-Russia war has been going on for 7 months. This is disrupting export activities. Global food prices have risen to record levels.
The organizations also called for immediate preparations to deal with the crisis through collective energy and financial support.
