Taipei: Last Sunday (September 18) a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.9 has devastated southeastern Taiwan. In all, 146 people were injured and only one died. The number of casualties did not capture the magnitude of the earthquake. However, the destruction of the iconic ‘Gaoliao Bridge’ in eastern Hualien County, Taiwan, shows just how extensive the tremors were. A drone footage posted online showed the 600-meter-long bridge completely in pieces. Popular tourist spots in Southeast Taiwan were connected through this bridge.

Drone footage posted on social media shows parts of the bridge falling into pieces on the water and grass below. The part that is still standing on the pillar also has many cracks. Somewhere the skeleton of the bridge has come out. The metal parts were twisted in such a way that it looked as if a monster had gone on a rampage.

In fact, dozens of earthquakes struck the southeast coast of the island nation since Saturday evening. The biggest tremor, however, was felt on Sunday morning. Due to which hundreds of people were stuck on the mountain roads. Footage published online showed several train carriages derailed, several high-rise buildings collapsed. A tsunami warning was issued after the strong earthquake. But in the end, Taiwan was saved from the twin dangers.

The country’s meteorological department said the epicenter of the earthquake was the city of Taitung. In the capital, Taipei, high-rises also shook violently for a short time. The US Geological Survey reported that the source of the earthquake was 10 kilometers deep.

Incidentally, earthquakes are not a new danger in Taiwan. The country is located near the junction of two tectonic plates, within the ‘Ring of Fire’, a highly seismic region of the Pacific Ocean. Due to this special location, the island nation witnesses frequent earthquakes. The last time a very strong earthquake hit Taiwan was in 1999. The magnitude was 7.6 on the Richter scale. More than 2000 people died. In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people.
