World Suicide Prevention Day is being observed around the world today, September 10, with the theme ‘Create hope through action’. Like other countries, the day is being celebrated in Bangladesh with various arrangements.
Since 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated on September 10 every year to prevent suicide around the world.
The World Health Organization and the World Federation of Mental Health are working together to observe the day, along with the International Organization for Suicide Prevention. In 2011, about 40 countries of the world celebrated this day.
Experts say that people choose the path of suicide due to family violence, quarrels, physical and mental abuse, failure in love tests, poverty, unemployment, instability of daily life, moral degradation and drugs.
According to a World Health Organization report published in 2014, more than 800,000 people worldwide commit suicide every year. According to the organization, a person commits suicide every 40 seconds. In addition, about 15 to 20 times of people attempt suicide and fail.
Anchal Foundation has been working on the mental health awareness of the youth for a long time. The organization organized a press conference on the virtual platform on Friday (September 9) to mark International Suicide Prevention Day.
It was informed that 364 students of various educational institutions of the country committed suicide from January to August 2022. 194 percent of students who committed suicide in those eight months were school going students.
Today this day is being celebrated in Bangladesh like all over the world. According to the report of the World Health Organization, Bangladesh ranks tenth in the world in terms of suicide rates.
At least 13 thousand to 64 thousand people commit suicide in Bangladesh every year. According to various research reports published in the past period, the death rate of suicide in the country is at least 7.8 to 39.6 per lakh people.
