Six Awami League leaders have applied for the party’s nomination for the post of chairman of Barisal Zilla Parishad.

Barisal Mahanagar Awami League president AKM Jahangir said that these six leaders have submitted the form at the party’s Dhanmondi office till the last day on Thursday.

He told bdnews24.com that he and the current district council administrator Md. Maidul Islam, former chairman of Zilla Parishad Khan Altaf Hossain Bhulu, party metropolitan vice-president VP Anwar Hossain, vice-president hero freedom fighter Syed Anisur Rahman and Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Parishad leader Delwar Hossain Dilu.

Although six leaders of Awami League expressed their desire to be candidates for the post of chairman, they said that the others will accept whoever the party president nominates and work for him.

One has collected nomination papers as an independent, even though no candidate has been nominated from any other political party.

Writer and journalist Asaduzzaman Asad, who collected nomination papers for the post of chairman as an independent candidate, told bdnews24.com, “I will contest the election. That is my final decision.”

Current district council administrator and president of Barisal Mehendiganj Upazila Awami League. Maidul Islam told bdnews24.com that he will seek party nomination. If the party chief nominates him, he will be elected. Don’t be an election candidate if you don’t get party nomination.

Former chairman Khan Altaf Hossain Bhulu has also applied for party nomination.

He told bdnews24.com that he got the party nomination first in the last election. Except him. The matter of party nomination to Maidul Islam was also not informed from the center.

“After hearing the news through newspapers and magazines, I went to Ganabhaban in Dhaka and met the party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and wanted to know about the matter. Then the president said he was forced to change.”

The veteran politician claimed that he was also ordered to contest. However, he said that if he does not get the party nomination, he will not hold an independent election this time.

AKM Jahangir, president of Metropolitan Awami League seeking nomination, told bdnews24.com, “My political guardian is Abul Hasanat Abdullah. He has submitted the party form to become a party candidate. I am hopeful that the party will nominate me.”

If the party does not give the nomination, he will not hold the election and said that he will work for the one who will be nominated.

Vice President of Metropolitan Awami League VP Anwar Hossain told bdnews24.com that he did not seek party nomination once for Barisal Sadar Constituency, once for Zilla Parishad Chairman and three times for Upazila Parishad Chairman.

But this time, the former student leader said, “President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina knows about my sacrifice for the party. So I am optimistic.”

He said, “After the announcement of the schedule, I informed the General Secretary of the Metropolitan Awami League and City Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah about seeking nominations.”

The leader, who was elected VP in 1990 from the Barisal Government Brajmohan College Students’ Sangsad, said that he supported him to seek party nomination.

District Awami League vice-president Veer Muktijoddha Syed Anisur Rahman told bdnews24.com, “I have submitted the form seeking party nomination. As an active worker of Chhatra League, I participated in the war called by Bangabandhu. Since then, I have served in various positions of the party. Never went against the party. I will be rewarded for my sacrifice to the team.”

He said that he will not contest the election if the party does not give him the nomination.

Delwar Hossain, the general secretary of Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Parishad for 17 years and currently a member of the central committee of Krishak League, told bdnews24.com, “Awami has been involved in politics since his student days. I am eligible to get nomination from the party. But I will not vote if the party does not give. I will work for whoever the party gives me.”

Barisal Sadar Upazila Chairman and Metropolitan Awami League Vice President Saidur Rahman Rintu, former President of Barisal District Lawyers Association Obaidullah Saju did not apply for party nomination at the last minute even though they were in talks to contest the election.
