Pillars cracked, plasters fell from the ceiling during classes

Falling roof tiles can cause fatal accidents at any time. Teaching is going on in the classroom under such risk. When it rains, water falls on the roof and gets wet the important documents of the office and the books of the students. Such a poor picture was seen in Shuktagarh Mahmudia Dakhil Madrasa building of Rajapur Upazila of Jhalkathi.

Class VII student Afchana Akhter told Jago News, ‘I feel scared to sit in class. When the roof falls on your head.’

Mahfuzur Rahman, a class nine student, has the same fear. ‘Cracked roof overhead,’ he says. Polyester is falling off. When it rains, the roof leaks. Then our books and notebooks get wet. Even if I do classes, I am in fear.’

Class 10 student Tamanna Akhter says, ‘Even though the madrasa building is not very old, its condition is as fragile as the old building. Big cracks in the pillars of the building. The plaster of the roof is crumbling. Accidents are also happening in it. Earlier, a student was injured when the ceiling tiles fell during the farewell ceremony of the Dakhil candidates. We fear classes.’

When the plaster of the ceiling falls on our heads. Fatal accidents can occur at any time, including loss of life. I sit in class with such fear. When the teachers come to the class, they also have the fear of the plaster falling off.

According to madrasa sources, it was established in 1977, but after 20 years in 1997-98, a single-storey building with four rooms was constructed. At present the condition of the building is very dilapidated. At times there are also disruptions in electricity supply. An average of more than 200 students from infant to class 10 are taking risk classes every day.

Maulana Mahbubur Rahman, superintendent of the madrasa, told Jago News that the matter has been reported to the local MP, Directorate of Education and Engineering, District Education Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). He drew the attention of the concerned in this regard.

Rajapur Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Mustafa Alam told Jago News, ‘I have just joined Rajapur. I have not recognized all the institutions yet. However, on the road, I saw a one-story building of Shuktagarh Mahmudia Dakhil Madrasa. It is not known whether it is risky or not. No one has told me yet. Action will be taken in this regard very soon.’
