An Awami League leader named Saidar Rahman Malitha (50) was shot dead in Pabna. The deceased Saider Rahman was an executive member of Pabna Municipal Awami League.
The murder took place in Bangabaria Mujib Dam area of Hemayetpur Union of Sadar Upazila on Friday (September 9) afternoon.
Eyewitnesses said that Sider was sitting in a shop on the embankment in Bangabaria Bazar around 1:30 pm. At that time, a group of terrorists surrounded him on a motorcycle. The helmeted assailants then fired at him indiscriminately. Sider died on the spot.
The terrorists fled when the locals came forward after seeing the matter.
Saddam Molla, the grandson of the deceased, said that grandfather called me at noon. After 10 minutes of talking, I got the news who killed him.
The deceased’s wife Dilruba Jahan said in a tearful voice, “My husband had a dispute over the land of Alauddin Malitha, the former chairman of Hemayetpur Union. Alauddin Saidar was threatening to kill Malitha for several days. He also threatened yesterday. Killed him today. What will I do with my three minor children? I want those who killed my husband to be punished.”
In this regard, local Hemayetpur UP chairman Jahangir Alam said, “The dispute between Alauddin and Saidar Rahman’s clan over Sharikana land is long-standing. Due to this, there have been several fights between them. I heard today’s incident also because of that dispute. Besides, there was a dispute between them regarding the purchase of land for a solar plant of a private company in the area.”
Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam told the Dhaka Tribune about the incident, “After receiving the news, the process of recovering the body from the spot has started. Initially, it is believed that this murder has been committed due to previous enmity. The matter is being investigated. Superintendent of Police Akbar Ali Munshi visited the spot. The police have started work to arrest the killers by collecting the CCTV footage.”
