In the sky, in the air, the sound of arrival is ringing. The surroundings are decorated with the worship of Goddess Durga in the ceremony of autumn sky, kashful, shiuli flowers. Be it the touch of the theme or the old puja ritual, everyone has become busy in organizing mother worship. And in the Banedi houses of Bengal, the puja has started. Another Banedi family of Jorasanko, the Dan family, once gave equal footing to the Puja along with the Thakur house of Jorasanko. He was actually a foster son of the family whose hand held the beginning of the famous Banedi Puja in North Kolkata. He welcomed the mother.
In 840 Gokulchandra Dan adopted Shivakrishna Dan as his own son. That year Shivakrishna was the first to start mother worship in the Dan family. And the Tagore family of Jorasanko was also forced to surrender to the Jaulus in that puja. During the period of Shivakrishna Dan, the Dan family saw huge profits in the family business. Shivakrishna Babu brought ‘Ma’ to his family with that profit. He was particularly fond of dressing up as himself; He also decided to decorate Goddess Durga with beautiful ornaments.
As you think, so do! On his orders specially worked ornaments and clothes were also brought from France and Germany for the idol of the goddess. The dress had golden silver lace work and some precious stones. At that time no one in Calcutta has seen that! It is said that at that time, when the goddess came to the mortal world, she first adorned herself with the clothes and ornaments of the Dan house. Then he went to other places. Even today that saying is prevalent.
The Dan family still welcomes the goddess in that dress. A kind of metal sheet made of copper and brass is used in the painting of idols. The entrance of that too is held by Shivakrishna Babu Also on Bodhan day an umbrella made of dark soft velvet, worked with gold and silver lace is taken to Kalabau for bathing. Puja is done in this house according to Vaishnava. Saptami, Ashtami, Navami is performed on three days of Kumari Puja. However, sacrifice is forbidden in this family. Food is not given. Luchi, curries and sweets are offered to the mother as offerings. This puja of the Dan family is done following strict scriptural rules.
The rivalry of the Dan family with the Jorasanko Thakurbari was going on in Seyane-Seyane. A very interesting story about this is also popular among the people. That is – on the day of Vijaya Dasami, about 40 carriers used to carry the goddess on their shoulders to the Bisarjan. However, before reaching the Ganga, they used to rotate the goddess several times by beating the drum in front of the Thakurbari. Then he went to desert. However, with the passage of time, that tradition seems to have disappeared. Now not carried on the shoulders of the bearers, the goddess is taken to the Ganga ghats in a lorry. The splendor of Puja of long ago has faded to a large extent today. Still, relying on the traditions of the past, the Puja of Jorasankor Dan Bari is still being held with the title of one of the Banedi Pujas of Tilottama.
