The inquiry committee has identified 12 reasons for the death of five passengers of a private car when the crane girder of the flyover under construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project fell in the capital’s Uttara.
Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Noori gave this information in the conference room of Road Transport and Highways Department at the Secretariat on Sunday (September 4) afternoon.
He said that the investigation committee formed in this incident blamed the contractor CGGC for the accident. The accident happened due to their negligence. Punitive action will be taken against them.
Highlighting the reasons identified behind the accident, Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Noori said, they worked without prior permission on public holidays, the first time they did the work of installing girders during the day, the other day they used to do the work at night. The crane is operated by an assistant. The crane was not licensed. The crane was being operated on uneven ground. The crane did not have a digital monitor. There was no prior work permit.
He also said that there was no traffic management at the time of the accident. The safety engineer was not properly qualified. There was no emergency management plan. Employment of workers in contractor establishments was not allowed.
Incidentally, five passengers of a private car were killed when a girder fell from the crane of the BRT project in front of Paradise Tower in Uttara at around 4:30 pm (August 15). The newlyweds in the car were seriously injured but survived. The victims were returning from attending a wedding ceremony in Dhaka.
The deceased are Ayub Ali Hossain Rubel (55), Fahima Akhtar (38), Jharna Akhtar (27), Jannatul (6) and Zakaria (4). The injured newlyweds are Hriday (26) and Rhea Moni (21).
The brother of Fahima Akhtar and Jharna Akhtar who died on the night of the incident. Afran Mondal Babu became the plaintiff and filed a case in Uttara West Police Station. September 22 is scheduled for submitting the investigation report of the case.
