Referring to her son Sajib Wazed Joy as the entrepreneur behind many of the government’s digital initiatives, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “However, it would be best to leave the decision to enter politics to him and the people of the country.” In an interview given to the Indian news agency ANI, the Prime Minister revealed his son’s involvement in active politics in this way.

The Prime Minister said, ‘Look… he is a mature man now. It depends on him, but he is working for the country. This digital Bangladesh we have built, all these satellites or submarine cables or computer training, these digital systems… all these are from his ideas… you know… he is helping me in my work… he is all these. is doing but never thought about joining the party or the ministry.’

However, referring to one of the many events that happened in the party, he said, ‘There was a lot of pressure from within the leaders and workers so that Joy should play a role in active politics.’ He said, ‘Even in the conference of Awami League, there was a demand to activate him. At that time I told him to get in front of the microphone and say what you want. He did so, he said, no, I don’t want a position in the team right now. Rather, those who are working here for the party should get the post. Why should I occupy a position? I am with my mother, working for the country, I am helping my mother, so that is what I will do. He actually thought so. It’s not like I asked or asked him to do it.’

The interviewer asked if he thought it was time to call Joy into politics. In reply, Sheikh Hasina said, ‘It depends on the people.’

He also said, ‘Succession politics is not an issue in Bangladesh.’

At one stage of the interview, the Prime Minister recalled the role of his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in formulating the foreign policy of Bangladesh and said, “Our foreign policy is very clear. ‘Friendship to all, enmity to none’ which my father, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented in his speech at the United Nations. And we are following that ideal. And my aim is towards the people…how to improve their living conditions…how to increase their standard of living. And I have always said that we have only one enemy and that is poverty. We have to work together.’

Sheikh Hasina said that she felt developed countries should resolve all disputes and differences through dialogue. “I feel, of course, the medium of discussion should be to resolve the outstanding issues between China and India, but I don’t want to talk about it. I want the development of my country and we have good relations with India as our nearest neighbour. But it is true that we have many bilateral problems and we are solving many problems.’

The prime minister said that the development of Bangladesh is the main concern for him, in this case he is ready to take help from any foreign country for the development of the people of the country.
