Murdered by husband, body returned home from South Africa

The body of Shanta Shikder, who was murdered by her husband in South Africa, returned home. Shanta’s body arrived at the airport around 4 pm on Friday. Later the family members came to Mirzapur police station with Shanta’s dead body. After the post-mortem, she was sent to Tangail Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. Shanta Shikder is the daughter of Abdus Chalam Shikder of Thalpara village in Fatepur Union of this upazila.

The South African police arrested Swami Sumon Mia from a forest near Lydenburg town in South Africa’s Pumalanga province around 9 pm Bangladesh time last Monday (August 29) for killing Shanta Shikder. Earlier on Sunday (August 28) around 1:00 am Bangladesh time, family members alleged that Suman killed his wife at his home and ran away. Family members of the victim said that Sumon Mia, the son of Khoka Master of Kanchanpur Dakshinpara village of Basail Upazila, migrated to South Africa eight years ago. There he started business in the city of Lydenburg. A year ago, Suman married Shanta Shikder, the daughter of uncle Abdus Chalam Shikder of Tholpara village. He took Shanta to South Africa six months ago.

They claimed that Suman kept pressuring Shanta for money from a few days after leaving for South Africa. This started their marital discord. When Shanta told her father about it, she was given 7 lakh rupees at various times. On Sunday (August 28) around 1:00 am Bangladesh time, husband Suman Mia beat and stabbed his wife Shanta and ran away. Shanta’s father Abdus Chalam Shikder said, ‘My daughter was killed in a planned way for money. Thinking about my daughter’s happiness, I gave Suman 7 lakh rupees with great difficulty. The money that his younger brother took to my house. Even if there is a murder case in South Africa, I will not get justice. Because I have no family in that country. I have allowed the autopsy of my daughter’s body in the country to file a case in the country. ‘

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirzapur Police Station Sheikh Abu Sale Masud Karim said, ‘Shantar’s body has been sent to Tangail Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital after the autopsy. Family members can file a case if they want. ‘
