Two people have been killed in a truck crush at separate places in Jessore’s Jhikargacha. The accident took place on Saturday (September 3) at Jhikargacha bus stand on Jessore-Benapole highway at around 7 am and at Haria Nimtala intersection at around 12 noon.
Hasanul Kabir Reza (38), son of Syed Ali Biswas of Purandarpur village of the upazila, who was killed at Jhikargacha bus stand, is the joint convener of the Municipal Youth Party.
Eyewitnesses said that Hasan was going to the destination in a van. Coming in front of Jhikargacha Islami Bank, the van turned around and tried to go in the opposite direction. At that time, a Benapole-bound goods truck (Dhaka Metro-T-16-5689) hit the van from behind and Hasan fell in front of the truck and was crushed under the wheel. When he was rescued and sent to the Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty there declared Hasan dead.
On the other hand, Shihab Hossain (17), who died in the accident in Haria Nimtala, is the son of Bajlur Rahman of Kumri village of the upazila and a ninth grade student of Baganchra United Secondary School in Sharsha.
Bazlur Rahman, the father of the deceased, said that Shihab had left the house in the morning to study in private. Later I got news of his accident.
Eyewitnesses said that the two riders were going towards Gadkhali on a motorcycle to get petrol. On the way, when Haria reached Nimtala intersection, a truck (Jeshor-T-11-5470) coming from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle. At that time, a rider who was behind jumped and survived, but the driver Shihab was killed on the spot. Later fire service came and recovered the body.
Suman Bhakta, officer-in-charge of Jhikargacha police station, said that Navaran Highway police station will not file a case on behalf of the family of the deceased in the accident at Jhikargacha bus stand.
On the other hand, no case was filed by the family of the deceased in Haria. However, two trucks are detained. The driver fled.
