Rakibul’s pregnant wife Hansi Begum, father Md. Shafi Howladar, mother Lili Begum, son Md. Sakibul Islam, elder brother Md. Tariqul Islam, sister Sultana Begum and brother Md. Arif, along with other relatives, were freedom fighters and teachers. , UP members and locals were present.
In a written complaint, Sakibul Islam, the son of the victim, said, “Last Saturday (September 27) in the afternoon, when the terrorists tried to plant Aman rice seedlings in my ancestral property, when we prevented them, they systematically attacked us with native weapons and sticks. Shahidul Islam Shahid, Ibrahim of South Chechri village. Hossain Tapu, Nazrul Islam Howlader, Mizan Howlader, Dolly Begum, Mamun Howlader and many others. During this time, my father Rakibul Islam, grandfather Shafi Uddin and uncle Tariqul were seriously injured. The injured were first taken to Amua Hospital and later to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Later, when my father Rakibul’s condition worsened, the doctor sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He died yesterday (September 2) morning after being under treatment there for six days.
Sakibul Islam also said, ‘Because my father died, our family is now on the verge of destruction. I am an only child, I am studying writing. My mother is currently sick as she is pregnant. The killing of my father has made my education precarious. Besides, the pregnant mother can face serious health risks at any time. We are demanding exemplary punishment for this heinous killing and attack from the Prime Minister through the sit-in programme.
Kathalia police station officer in-charge (investigation) HM Shaheen said that a murder case has been registered in this incident. The accused Md. Nanna Mia, son of Siraj Uddin of Dakshin Chenchari village of Upazila, has been arrested. Efforts are on to arrest others.
It is to be noted that on the afternoon of August 27, at Shatkura Mor area of Dakshin Chenchri village of the upazila, at least five persons including a father and son were seriously injured in a clash over the planting of Aman paddy seedlings on opposing land.
