Narayanganj city’s popular and one of the top terrorist BNP leader Zakir Khan has been arrested by RAB after returning to the country after 21 years. RAB 11 captain Tanveer Mahmud Pasha confirmed that he was arrested early Saturday morning around 11:30 am.
Tanveer Mahmud Pasha said that there are several cases against Zakir. He was absconding abroad for a long time. He recently returned to the country and went into hiding. Based on secret information, he was arrested with weapons from Bashundhara area of the capital. A detailed briefing will be given in this regard.
Police and BNP leaders said that after BNP came to power in 1991, Nasim Osman’s dispute with Zakir Khan ended. Later Zakir Khan joined BNP in 1994 under the leadership of BNP leader Kamaluddin Mridha. In 1995, Zakir Khan became known in the city after publicly shooting and killing the top terrorist Dayal Masood of Deobogh area behind Sonar Bangla Market in the city.
At the end of the BNP government in 1996, Zakir Khan was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed in connection with the attack and vandalism of Khawaja Super Market in the city. But he was freed by the amnesty of the president. Zakir Khan became known in the city as the grandson of the then Home Minister Abdul Matin Chowdhury.
Seven months after the Awami League government came to power in 1996, a case was filed against a contractor in the Banglabazar area of Kashipur for demanding extortion. Zakir Khan was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in the second phase of this case. Zakir Khan was imprisoned during the four years of Awami League’s rule.
In 1999, Zakir Khan got the post of Zilla Chhatra Dal president after getting out of jail for a short time. At the end of Awami League’s regime in 2000, when Shamim Osman evicted Tanbazar and Nimatoli brothels from Narayanganj, the ‘economic backbone’ of Zakir Khan’s family was broken.
After BNP came to power in 2001, Zakir remained in jail for almost five months. On February 18, 2003, Sabbir Alam Khandkar, the younger brother of Taimur Alam Khandkar of Narayanganj, then Vice President of BKMEA, was killed. Zakir Khan was the main accused in this case. Since then he was absconding from the country. Later an Interpol red alert was issued against him.
