Super League: Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith is set to win

Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith believes his players are ready for a chance to push themselves into this year’s play-offs.

Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith believes his side are ready for Saturday’s winner-takes-all clash with Castleford Tigers as they battle to secure a Super League final play-off spot.

With both sides losing last time out, the Rhinos missed out on a top-six spot by losing to the Catalan Dragons, a clash likely to see the winner progress to the play-offs at the expense of their rivals.

Whoever wins will join St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Catalan Dragons, Huddersfield Giants and Salford Red Devils in a battle for a crucial place in the Grand Final.

While Smith is a coach who favors week-on-week improvement for his side, he now admits that “a lot is at stake” in Saturday’s clash.

“I’ve been asked about the league table but it’s safe to say it’s not worth looking at the table now because everyone knows what’s at stake, us and Castleford, winner takes all.

“It’s great for the competition and we’re excited to have the opportunity to do it,” Smith said.

“If someone had told us a few weeks ago that we were playing for the play-offs at home in Round 27, we would have been over the moon.”

Although the pressure is on, the Rhinos coach believes his team is now used to the do-or-die mentality required for such high-pressure matches.

“It’s another level because you know you have one last chance to get a result, but up to a point we’ve been playing with that pressure for weeks,” he said.

“We won six in a row before the Catalonia game, so we’ve been playing for a few months, so we don’t have to step it up too much.

“Our aim will be to try and put in a brighter performance on Saturday.”
