Legendary fiction writer Maitreyi Devi’s birthday is today

Maitreyi Devi

Today is the birthday of Maitreyi Devi, the author of the novel ‘Na Hanyate’. He was born on September 1, 1914 in Chittagong. Chittagong was the workplace of his father Surendranath Dasgupta. Father was a philosopher and essayist. Maitreyi Devi’s childhood was spent at her father’s home in Goila village of Agailjhar in Barisal district. And mother’s name is Himani Madhuri Roy. Maitreyi Devi died on February 4, 1990 in Kolkata, India.

His literary career began at the age of 16. His first book of poetry ‘Udit’ was published in 1930. The introduction to this book was written by poet Rabindranath Tagore. His second book of poetry is ‘Chittachaya’.

In 1934 he Dr. Married to Manomohan Sen. Manomohan Sen was the manager of a cinchona factory in Mongpu and researched the cultivation of the anti-malarial herb cinchona.

As Maitreyi Devi was a favorite of Rabindranath Tagore, they visited Mongpu four times between 1938 and 1940 at the invitation of Rabindranath Maitreyi. In 1942, Rabindranath wrote a memoir ‘Mongpute Rabindranath’ about his memories of the days he spent in Mangpu and his interaction with him.

His other books on Rabindra are ‘Close to Heaven’, ‘Kabi Sarvabhaum’, ‘Rabindranath at Home and in the World’, ‘Rabindranath: The Man Behind His Poetry.’

His notable books are ‘Udit’ and ‘Chittachaya’. The novel ‘Na Hanyate’. Story books ‘Vidhi O Bidhata’, ‘Et Rakta Khen’, ‘Gods and Humans of Rigveda’, ‘Hiranmoya Pakhi’ and ‘Aditya Marich.’

In 2012, ‘Bangladesh Muktijudda Maitri Sammanna’ was awarded to Maitrayi Devi by Bangladesh for her role in achieving independence through cooperation in Bangladesh’s liberation war. Apart from this, he was awarded India’s Padma Shri (1977), Sahitya Akademi Award (1976).
